Plebes graduate to cadets with Capshield Ceremony

Oct 10, 2025

Valley Forge Military College held its annual Capshield Ceremony on the main area Friday afternoon, marking a defining milestone for the newest members of the Corps of Cadets in front of their friends and families.

During their more than seven weeks of the plebe system, the plebes underwent a rigorous period of physical, mental, and emotional challenges designed to test their endurance, discipline, and leadership — all while embodying the institution’s five cornerstones: Academic Excellence, Character Development, Personal Motivation, Physical Development, and Leadership.

“For just under a century, Valley Forge’s Plebe System has served as a portal to transform America’s youth into the nation’s next leaders,” said Dr. Jesse Phillips, VFMC Dean. “These young men and women have truly earned the title of Cadet, with all the rights and responsibilities that come with it.”

Several Plebes were recognized during the ceremony for their exceptional performance and embodiment of Valley Forge’s core values:

  • Cadet Lloyd Andersen – Leadership Award

  • Cadet Emerson Austin – Warrior Ethos Award

  • Cadet Robert Hoopes – Physical Fitness Award

  • Cadet Chase Johnston – Exemplary Service Award

  • Cadet Travis Lutz – Plebe of the Month

  • Cadet Hubert Michon – Plebe of the Month

  • Cadet Leslie Salguero – Crucible Warfighter Award

  • Cadet Michael Witkowski – Best Plebe of the Plebe System

The highlight of the afternoon came with the Capshield Presentation, a tradition that dates back nearly 100 years. Designed by Lieutenant General Milton G. Baker, the Capshield features red and white stripes, thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the motto “Courage, Honor, Conquer.” The emblem depicts General George Washington kneeling in prayer at Valley Forge — a symbol of humility, faith, and perseverance.

After the final orders were read and the freshmen of the 98th Corps of Cadets were officially recognized as Cadets of Valley Forge Military College, parents and guardians then stepped forward to pin the Capshield on their cadets’ berets, signifying the completion of their transformation from Plebes to Cadets.
